Our take

  • Make sure whatever you push actually posts as payroll -- SoFi filters on that label specifically, not on where the money comes from or what kind of account it's leaving.
  • Manufactured-deposit workarounds here get patched fast, so don't lock in a specific method ahead of time -- have a backup ready in case the one you were counting on stops working before you fund.
  • Going for the full $400? Get to $5,000 within 25 days of your very first qualifying deposit, not account opening -- that clock starts the moment money lands, so don't sit on it between pushes.
  • SoFi's ChexSystems/EWS pull behavior isn't well established either way -- if you're carrying negative history elsewhere, go in expecting some denial risk rather than assuming a clean approval.

Core details

Requirements

$50
  • Receive eligible direct deposits adding up to at least $1,000 (but less than $5,000) within 25 days of your first eligible direct deposit. Eligible direct deposits are recurring ACH deposits of regular income -- payroll, pension, or government benefits -- from an employer, payroll or benefits provider, or government agency. Check deposits, peer-to-peer transfers, merchant payments, plain bank transfers, external wires, and tax refunds do not count. The total across the window sets which single tier you earn; deposits can come from more than one deposit.

$400
  • Receive eligible direct deposits adding up to at least $5,000 within 25 days of your first eligible direct deposit to earn the full $400. Eligible direct deposits are recurring ACH deposits of regular income -- payroll, pension, or government benefits -- from an employer, payroll or benefits provider, or government agency; check deposits, peer-to-peer transfers, merchant payments, plain bank transfers, external wires, and tax refunds do not count. The total may be reached across multiple deposits, but the first eligible deposit must post on or before 12/31/26 to start the clock.

Direct deposit methods

Confirmed4

  • Chase Business Checking

Works when sent through Chase's paid employee-payment (payroll) service, which codes the ACH as PAYROLL. A plain Chase business ACH transfer is not enough -- it has to be the payroll-designated payment. Standard ACH (not same-day/real-time) is what users report using.

  • Capital One Business Checking

Works when the outgoing ACH is sent with 'Payroll' selected in the memo/type field so it codes as payroll. Capital One's business ACH flow lets you designate the payment as payroll.

  • Current

Multiple June 2026 confirmations that pushing from Current with 'Payroll' written in the memo/note field triggers an eligible DD (bonus often posts same day). Without the 'Payroll' memo it does NOT work.

  • Relay Business Checking

One user reports Relay works as DD 'with payroll in memo'. Single report -- confirm before relying on it.

Does not work8

  • Kraken

Previously triggered the bonus but stopped working around June 2026 -- withdrawals now post as an ordinary/merchant deposit rather than payroll and no longer count. Deposits also take about 7 days to clear before you can push them out.

  • Fidelity CMA

Fidelity CMA pushes post as ordinary transfers, not payroll, and do not trigger the bonus.

  • Fidelity Brokerage

Fidelity brokerage pushes post as ordinary transfers, not payroll, and do not trigger the bonus. Codes the same way as Fidelity CMA.

  • Charles Schwab Brokerage

Schwab brokerage transfers do not code as payroll and do not trigger the bonus.

  • American Express Checking

Amex outbound ACH is always labeled 'TRANSFER' rather than 'PAYROLL' (any memo lands in the ACH addendum), so it does not qualify as a direct deposit.

  • US Bank Business Checking

Reported not to trigger the bonus. Based on a single user report.

  • Robinhood

Listed among accounts that did NOT trigger DD (brokerage and bank both reported as not working).

  • Varo

Listed among accounts that did NOT trigger DD ('...and Varo bank all did NOT work to trigger DD').
